1. Learn about Different Types of Witches

Kitchen, Green, Cosmic, Hedge, Divination, Sea, Solitary, Wiccan, Crystal, Baby Witch…

There are many different types of witches. Some of us like to call our path specific ways, and others do not necessarily feel the need to label and restrict their practice.

To be honest, you don’t need to label yourself a certain type of witch. However, having a general direction on what you want to focus on at first is quite beneficial.

If you are new to the Craft, it might be helpful to research various types of witches and other baby witch topics.

To make it easier for you, I made this fun quiz that will tell you what type of witch you are based on your witchy aesthetic and interest. Take it with a grain of salt and enjoy the journey!

Below you can find a page about different types of witches.

2. Start to Record your Learnings in a Book of Shadows

Book of Shadows, Grimoire, or Witch’s Journal is a written record of your path. It can cover topics such as moon magic, colors, candles, and correspondences. It can also be a journal for your dream interpretation, divination, spell records and results, and shadow work.

When you first start your witchcraft journey as a baby witch, it’s good to write down everything you learn that sparks your interest.

The best way to start a Book of Shadows is to keep a three-ring binder and organize your knowledge there. It allows you to have various sections and don’t worry too much at the beginning, as the pages can be moved and replaced.

Pinterest is a great start to research topics for your Book of Shadows.

Join the Witch Journal newsletter and receive the list of 55+ witchcraft topics to research and include in your Witch’s Journal. After you submit your name and email, you will get a password to a page with Free Book of Shadows PDFs.

I also wrote a whole blog post on the Book of Shadow topic and every Baby Witch can find their tips and tricks on keeping magical records!

As a Baby Witch, you can record your magical journey in any way you want!

3. Baby Witch Supplies List

When you start researching witchcraft and reading Baby Witch Tips, you might find yourself looking at many pictures of witchcraft/Wiccan altars and tools that other practitioners use.

It might be a bit daunting, especially if you are on a budget, but don’t worry, there are many cheap witchcraft tools that you can use in your craft and they are as effective as the more expensive items available out there.

  1. YOU:

The first and most important part of the magic is you and your intention.

It is the driving force for all the change and personal transformation. Things such as meditation, raising vibrations, and visualization are great magical tools on their own.
  2. WITCH HERBS:

If you want to go a bit further, you can start using the common herbs that you have in your cooking cabinet.

Things such as basil, parsley, cardamom, star anise, black pepper, etc have magical correspondences that you can research in books – a great one to have on hand is “Cunningham’s Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs” by Scott Cunnigham.
  3. NATURE TREASURE:

Things that you find on walks to the forest, mountains, and beach can be great magical tools too.

You can consecrate a twisted stick and use it as a wand. You can also make your pendulum or collect small stones and make them into a rune set.

I am planning to make more content like this in the future. Let me know in the comments what witchy DIY would you like to see first!
  4. CRYSTALS:

Not everyone has to collect crystals, yet many practitioners do and work with them in their craft.

Some crystals, especially the tumbled ones, are quite cheap and you can find the ones that most resonate with you. In one of the steps below, you will find the best crystal starter kit for beginners.
  5. JARS AND BOTTLES:

You can recycle old jars and bottles and use them in your practice. Some smaller containers can be turned into spell jars and the bigger ones can be used for making the Moon Water!

You can also store your herbs, salts, potions, and other ingredients in them. As a wise witch once said – there is no such thing as too many jars!
  6. OTHER MAGICAL TOOLS:

Things such as a cauldron, broom, wand, chalice, and athame can be used but not necessarily.

You can always grow and expand your collection as you get more into practicing witchcraft and spellcasting.

Reading Books would be one of my favorite Baby Witch Tips I can give you.

When you start your magical journey it’s good to have some insights into other people’s craft.

While it doesn’t necessarily have to resonate with you at first, you can read some books and find what sparks your interest!

And then, start more extensive research from there.

7. More Baby Witch Tips

  • Start with intention

To practice witchcraft, you need a vision of what you want to accomplish. And that is your intention. It is a direction in which you want your magic to flow. An intention could be a “new car” a “passionate love” or “good health”.

  • Keep a journal

Record your magical learnings and various emotional and spiritual states. You will be surprised how interesting it is to come back to your notes and see how you’ve grown, which spells worked, and what you still need to work on in the future. You can read more about the Book of Shadows/Grimoire/Magical journal in this post

  • Clear quartz, white candles, and rosemary are universal substitutes

If you don’t have a specific item on hand, you can always substitute it with another thing. The great universal tools are white candles, clear quartz, and rosemary.

  • Forage things and learn about your local flora

Witches have been known for their close connection to Nature. There are many things that you can forage and use in your magical practice. Bundles of herbs, twigs, stones, and shells that I collect on my journeys find a place on my altar. It’s smart to invest in one book about your local flora and keep it on you on your walks.

  • Give back and thank Mother Earth

To keep a balance in your practice you should try to give back as much as you take. Harmony is the important law of the universe and should be encouraged while you practice.

I like to sit with a plant and ask for permission before I take anything from it. Afterward, I leave a small gift such as a hair, or stone, or simply bless the nature around.

Recently I found that ground eggshells can be used as a fertilizer so I plan to keep a small jar on my walks and give extra nutrition to the plants I forage from.

  • Join Kindle Unlimited and research books for free for the first month

This is such a great move if you are on a budget and want to get your hands on some great books for a month. You can read it on your smartphone, tablet, or in a browser on the computer.

I highly recommend trying Kindle Unlimited. It is free for the first month and you can cancel it anytime!

The great books to start with on kindle unlimited are: „Door to Witchcraft”, „Green Witch”, „The Spellbook for new witches”, „Crystals for Beginners and plenty of others!

  • Meditation

If I could recommend one thing that will set you in tune with yourself and the world around you, it would be meditation.

There are plenty of guided meditations to start with. I like to use the app called Insight Timer, where you can browse thousands of meditations, join live events, find meditation groups, and make friends!

Let me know in the comments if you meditate and what is your favorite way of meditation!

8. Making Witchcraft/Wiccan altar

As I mentioned above, you don’t need many things to start as a “baby witch”. You can find lots of things in nature and learn from various websites or by searching through Pinterest.

If you want to compose things on your altar, find what moves your soul. Put there your favorite items, pieces of jewelry (you can even enchant them for a specific purpose), candles, shells, twigs, and stones.

An altar is a sacred space where you practice your magic. It can be a corner of your bookshelf or a part of your table. It can even be a box full of your magical treasures.

Check out this post on how to create a witchcraft/Wiccan altar where you can find a lot of useful information!

9. Protection Spells for beginners

This is one of the most important Baby Witch Tips I can give you.

Everyone wants to feel safe when they perform magic and it has some benefits. Without proper protection, you might find your energy scattered in all places or even taken advantage of.

To be protected during spell work is good to cast a magical circle. You can do this by using salt or eggshells or just visualizing a safe sphere that allows you to perform magic in it.

You don’t always need protection, but it’s wise to know how to shield yourself when something feels off. For example, if you walk into a shopping mall and find yourself disturbed by various energies, you can visualize a simple protection sphere around you. It will allow you to maintain your energy undisturbed and focused at all times.

There are also many protection crystals and herbs to combine into a Protection Spell Jar, popets, or sachets. We will make a separate post about it as well.

As a Baby Witch is good to learn how to create a protection bubble!

10. Moon Magic for Beginners

One of the greatest things about Mother Nature is Her rhythm and cycle. Everything has perfect timing. And your magic can highly benefit from different moon phases.

For example, during the New Moon, you can set some intentions for the upcoming cycle. It’s a great time for a fresh start and growing anything that you wish to accomplish. It is also perfect for manifestation and attraction magic.

A Full Moon is a culmination of energy. It can serve any purpose as the lunar energies enhance anything that you want to work on. It is great for some gratitude practice and letting go.

During Waning Moon, you can focus more on releasing and letting go of things that no longer serve you.

By turning your life to the cycles of the moon, you will accept all life phases and natural flow with more ease. Simply realizing that everything has its perfect timing!

  • Daff Moon and Moonly – for following the moon phases
  • Insight timer – for meditation
  • Crystal Guide – for learning more about crystals
